The end of summer is fast approaching and
the kids are going back to school. I don’t know if the club has
too many of its members that run their trains in the winter or
snow, but for most of us we’ll be putting them away for another
season. Winter has always been the time of the year when I
construct the buildings I bring to the show for the displays,
but this year with my going to Florida I’ve become very lazy and
have not added anything to my collection. The next show that
we’ll be doing is the Castle Shannon Fire Department Train show
in October, and I hope to get busy and complete some of
buildings to go with John Weimer's exciting new track plan for
the street car. It has a turning-Y, two reversing loops, and a
dead end track where the car reverses direction. (Please see
photos) Please plan on coming to the Castle Shannon show to see
where our little street car is going to go and to help. Thank
you John for building the controls for the turning-Y and the
Thank you to Ken Maglietta and family for hosting the PGRS
family picnic. Ken said he was out in the country, and that we
should use his directions, not GPS directions, and cautioned us
about the many damaged roads and detours to his home. Ken wasn’t
kidding. Thank you again for the directions which were very
helpful. The chicken piccata your daughter made was delicious.
We need to get her to share the recipe with us for the dining
car. We all had a great time. Thank you for all the work you did
on the pre-view of the track plan we are going to use at Castle
Shannon. It was good that we had an opportunity to try it out and
work out some of the bugs before the show.
Thank you Dave for building the new controllers for the layout.
They are very compact and I think they are better than any being
sold. I know the club will put them to good use. Once members
see them they will be building one to use on their own lay out.
Fantastic job on the new controller Dave.
We had a small business meeting to discuss the Christmas party.
The members voted for me to go ahead and start making
arrangements. Please mark your calendar to save the date of
Saturday, December 1, 2018, for the Christmas party. This year
we are doing something a little different to keep costs down. We
have rented the Collier Township Community room, 2418 Hilltop
Road, Presto, Pa, 15142. The township building is down the road
about a mile from the Neville wood Country Club, and has a large
sign out in front of the building which should help everyone
find the building easily. We’ll have directions later on as we
get closer to the date. The community room is handicapped
accessible and has plenty of parking. The room is across the
hall from the Collier Township Police Dept. so we’ll have to be
good and not get too wild.
We have hired Cooked Goose catering of Oakdale for the food and
are working with them on the menu options. The plan is for all
you can eat buffet with three entrees, salad, and sides. We’ll
have the details of the menu later on in the next newsletter.
The September meeting is scheduled for Saturday, September 22,
2018, 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Our hosts will be Clark Kemmerer and
Alice Angelo at the Kemmerer home, 28 North Joslyn Drive,
Pittsburgh, Pa, 15235. Clark and Alice will provide ham,
scalloped potatoes, and drinks. They are asking our members to
help fill out the menu with a side of your choice by bringing
goodies for our meal in the following categories: A-F Dessert,
G-P Snack or salad, Q-Z Main dish. Please use the first letter
of your last name to know what category you fall in. If you have
a favorite dish and it doesn’t fall in the group that you’re in,
that’s OK too. Just let Clark and Alice know by September 19
what you will bring and how many are coming. Phone is
(412)795-0524 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
The club is looking for a member who can tow the trailer. If you
can help with the towing or have some idea on our problem,
please give me a call. Don Goodwin doesn’t have his larger truck
anymore. I would like to thank Don for the many years he has
towed the trailer and for all his help in maintaining it. Again
many thanks Don for all your hard work with the trailer. It has
been greatly appreciated.
